Escape with "Coming Down" by Alice and The Glass Lake

If you read this blog for a while, you may know how much I love the music of Alice And The Glass Lake. If I had to choose my favorite artists of 2013, that would definitely be her. So I thought that her new song would deserve a special article.

Today, Ryan Seacrest has decided to premier her new video for the third song of her new EP "The Evolution" called "Coming Down". You can see his blog feature here.

This video has been directed and edited by Ida Rodriguez Joglar, who has already worked on the music video of "Higher". Besides, the graphical elements in "Coming Down" remind the video of "Higher". This video was filmed at Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains. The landscapes are breathtaking.

The result is stunning. This video is a magical trip in sort of imaginary world surrounded by nature. I think that it reflects perfectly the spirit and the soul of the music by Alice And The Glass Lake.

To discover that song, I would advise you 2 things. For the first listen, create a subdued atmosphere, stretch out on your sofa or on your bed, close your eyes and let the beautiful and haunting voice of Alice Lake transport you in her musical universe. Then enjoy it by watching this amazing video.

Alice and The Glass Lake have some shows coming :

  • November 6th - Los Angeles, CA @ Space 15 Twenty - 6-9 pm:  live performance and video screening of “Coming Down"
  • November 13th -  New York, NY @ Rockwood Music Hall – Stage 2 - 10pm
  • December 21st - New York, NY @ Caffe Vivaldi - 9:30 pm

Introducing Lily Virginia

Lily Virginia is a singer-songwriter hailing from West California and now based out in New York City. She has spent 7 years in Argentina and Brazil to study music, which has probably gave her this touch of originality in her music.

Lily Virginia's music  influences are varying from Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten to the Pixies and Wye Oak. Her music style is a mix of pop, rock, americana and also folk music. Her voice is delicately powerfull and has an indescribable little something more.

She is actually working on her debut EP. 2 songs on 5, "Dreamtrain" and "Yuriko" are already available on bandcamp.

"Dreamtrain" is a beautiful ballad about love and relationship. The melody of that song is haunting. It starts like a whisper to your ears and intensifies as we go along the song advances, to finally let us sweep away by the whirlwind of the music.

The official video for "Yuriko" has been premiered yesterday on The Deli Magazine. I really like the visual effects in that video which are very well integrated into the landscape. The rythm of that song take you away in the twinkling of an eye and get stuck in your head quickly.

I like the touch of originality that Lily Virginia has in her songs. Some aspects of her songs make me think about tribal songs, when the vocals get bigger and the magic of the moment catches you. Lily Virginia hasn't finished to surprised us !

Introducing Gina Cimmelli

Gina Cimmelli is a singer-songwriter hailing from Brooklyn. Music has always been a part of her life, as her great-grandmother was an Italian opera singer and her grandfather a multi-instrumentalist from the golden days of radio. She has been graduated from the famous Berklee College of Music.

"Though often held in the same light as Feist or Regina Spektor, subtle timbres in her voice show hints of Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, revealing a stylistic approach that’s both relevant and timeless."

Gina Cimmeli is far to be a beginner in the music world. She has released her debut EP "Don't Be Mad" in 2009, following by the single "Forget" in May 2012 and her first album "Gina's Picture Show" in August 2012. Maybe some of you have already heard about Gina thanks to The Independent Music Awards. She was a winner of the 10th annual program in the folk/singer-songwriter category with her song "Don't Be Mad".

Gina Cimmelli - "Don't Be Mad"

Gina Cimmelli - "Aviator"

This summer, she is back with a new EP called "Summer Singles". The EP contains 3 songs in a various genre and with different emotions. But even in songs which are more sad, Gina manages to make them shine with a touch of joy.

The first single released of this EP is "Clementine". This song debuted on the American Songwriter. It's a beautiful song about a long-distance relationship. This song has an haunting melody.

The second song released of "Summer Singles" is "Like I Did". This song, about an ended relationship, has an intoxicating rhythm.

I have listened to all Gina's songs (you can listen to them on Spotify).  The huge force and common point all her songs have, is that she captivates you from the first second. She makes you take the train I you don't leave it until you've finished the trip in her musical atmosphere.

Introducing Elle BK (aka Lee Beth Kilgore)

This week I found some videos of a performance by Lee Beth Kilgore at the Bitter End in New York in February. She has a gorgeous voice. She sang 3 great indie rock songs during that show. I fall in love with her song "Space".

After few research, I could finally find some informations about that girl. So Lee Beth Kilgore is known as Elle Bk. If you live in LA, maybe you have the occasion to see her in a formerly band Yardley.

Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Elle BK has been writing songs since Junior High school. She was born into a musical family with a father who is a choral director, music arranger and has a Master’s degree in Music. From Birmingham to Nashville, then Los Angeles, and now New York – different inceptions of Elle BK have existed. She has now been playing guitar, writing songs, and performing in bands since 1992.

Christmas Songs Series II with Katie Costello

Katie Costello is a singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn. She has released two full-length albums “Kaleidoscope Machine” (2008), “Lamplight” (2011), and two 5-song EPs, “The City In Me” (2010), “Follow Your Every Beat” (2012).

For the Holiday Season, Katie has written her first holiday song called "This Time Of Year". The song is available on itunes. If you buy it, half of the proceeds of this song will be donated to The Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort.

"Katie Costello is both a musical force and a comedic force to be reckoned with. She is a character in her own right and everyone she meets is astounded by the profound creative insight she has already developed at such a young age. The self-proclaimed “song-doodler,” interweb philosopher, absurdist, and music farmer very fittingly describes her music with a word she’s also made up: Kitsch-Edge… A fusion of kitschy and edgy. "

Mara and The Bitter Suite

Mara And The Bitter Suite is band from NYC and New Jersey and headed up by Mara Davi (Broadway actress, lyrics/vocals) and Adam Waite (Composer, Conductor, Music and Keys).

After collaborating on multiple concerts for Birdland, Ars Nova, and Lyrica Chamber Orchestra, they decided it was time to write their own music and find their own sound.

Their debut album "Unspoken" was released in July 2012 and is available on itunes and amazon. I had the chance to listen to the whole album, which brings a real touch of originality in the music world. The 9 songs is a musical trip rythmed from beautiful ballads like 'When I" and "Walking Thru Water"  to  catchy songs like one of my favorite song from this album "Playground Song". Moreover, Mara's voice is just beautiful ! I think you should like this album as well.

Interview with Sarah Solovay !

"Sometimes, all you need is an acoustic guitar and a dream. Sarah Solovay's got both, and she happens to have a rather transcendent voice to boot. "

I think this sentence describe perfectly what is this talented New Yorker singer-songwriter and guitarist who has started to win the New York Songwriters Circle "Young Songwriters Award" in 2008 with her song "Gone".

She has released her debut EP "Gone" in 2009. I get to know her music at this period through myspace. And since then, she has never stopped to amazed me with her songs.

"Her sound exudes a true vibrancy because it's so personal and tangible. Sarah describes the alchemy at the heart of her sound."

Now in 2012, Sarah is back with a new EP "Superhuman" containing 5 catchy songs about love, relationships... with heartfelt and honest lyrics. This EP is available on itunes.

For this occasion, Sarah has accepted to answers few questions for The Indie Discovery.

Hope you'll like it.

TID : Hello Sarah and thank you for accepting the interview. For people who don’t know you yet, could you tell us few words about you and your music ?

SS : I'm 18 years old and I'm from New York City. I spend as much time as humanly possible writing songs about things I've been through personally, things my friends have been through, things I read about--pretty much anything can inspire me. As a result, my music is a mix of a lot of different sounds, but it tends to fall under the arc of "pop-rock-singer-songwriter-y" stuff. Everything else you'd want to know about me or my music can be found by listening to my songs!

TID : Three years has passed since your debut EP “Gone” and we can say that you've come a long way during these 3 years. You have opened for John Mayer in 2010. Three of your songs has been featured on TV, like for example “Hearts Collide” on the 90210 soundtrack. ... It seems that these years may have been a bit crazy. And you've done all of that by combining music and your studies. How do you manage both ?

SS : It's definitely been a challenge to balance school and music, and I wish I could say there was a formula for how to do it, but there's not. I kind of just have to roll with the punches, so to speak. When I have an assignment-heavy week in school, music takes a back seat, and vice versa. I take it one day at a time, and I've been lucky enough to manage so far.

TID : You’re back with a new EP “Superhuman” which has been released August 7th, 2012. Once again you’ve shown us your amazing writing skills and this EP is a real gem for their listeners. How does it feel to have finally new songs out ? Where did you draw your inspiration to write "Superhuman "EP?

SS : Thanks so much! I'm really, really psyched to be releasing new music. I drew my inspiration from a lot of different things, but most of it was about finishing up high school and coming into my own. I feel like the story of the title track, Superhuman, really embodies that spirit of growing up and becoming stronger, so that's why the EP is named what it is.

TID : This EP is available on itunes for the moment and already have met with a certain success. Will there be a physical version as well ? Do you plan to release a full lenght album then ?

SS : I'm not sure if we're going to release a physical copy of it, or if we would add a few more songs to it. It all depends on whether or not there's enough demand for the supply!

TID : Is there any place where people can see you performing these new songs during the summer?

SS : Unfortunately, I don't have any concerts in the near future. I'm heading off to college in two weeks, so I don't have much time in the next month or two. After that, though, hopefully I'll have a few shows. Check my website for updates!

TID : What are your plans for the months coming ?

SS : I just plan on getting settled into college life, taking a bunch of classes I'm interested in, meeting a ton of new people, and hopefully making some music with some of them.

TID : This blog help people to get to know indie artists. What are your favorite artists? Who do you suggest us to listen to ?

SS : These days, I've been hooked on Ed Sheeran, so I'd highly recommend listening to him. More generally, though, I've always been a huge Tom Petty fan, and Jackson Browne, and The Stones.

Go on itunes and buy "Superhuman". I promise you, you won't be disappointed by it !

Emily Danger - "Paintings "EP

Emily Danger is a band from New York City. The band consists of Emily Nicholas (vocals, piano), Ryan Nearhoff (vocals, guitar), Cameron Orr (violin, bass, melodica, vocals), Colin Lime (drums, vocals), and Coyote Anderson (bass).

"Nicholas’ voice truly serves as an instrument in its own right and, not only does the listener get mesmerized in her singing, they don’t want it to end"

The band has released an EP "Paintings" in April 2012. Unfortunately this EP contains only 4 songs. It's a pitty because all these songs are great and it's very frustrating not to be able to listen to more music from Emily Danger.

At the first listening, I've been quite impressed by Emily Nicholas' voice, in particular in the song "Shed My Skin". Just after hearing a few seconds of this song, my first reaction was "wow ! what a voice !"

The mix of the sound of each instruments and Emily's voice give to the listener a captivating music cocktail whose you will quickly become addicted.
